Ahmet Ertegun
July 31, 1923 – December 14, 2006

In 1947, Ahmet Ertegun and his partner Herb Abramson raised $10,000 and started Atlantic Records to showcase music that was generally being ignored by the majors; R&B; and Jazz. Atlantic would contribute greatly to the rise of Rock n’ Roll by signing and popularizing artists such as Ray Charles, Big Joe Turner, LaVern Baker, Ruth Brown, Chuck Willis, The Coasters, The Drifters and The Clovers.

Matt The Cat will air an interview he did with this true Rock n’ Roll pioneer as well as play the records that made Atlantic Records the most import record label in history. Hear Ahmet’s demo of the song, “Mess Around”, which he recorded in order to get Ray Charles to record it and many more rarities, Friday Night at 7pm EST – 4pm PST on XM’s 50s on 5.

H-Bomb Ferguson
1929 – 2006

On Sunday, November 26th, we lost one of the great unsung blues shouters when Robert “H-Bomb” Ferguson died at the age of 77. He died at Hospice of Cincinnati of complications from emphysema and cardiopulmonary disease. He made his best records for the NJ-based Savoy label during the early 1950s. He had a classic blue shouting style, similar to Wynonie “Mr. Blues” Harris and he will be greatly missed.

Miss Rhythm, RUTH BROWN has died.

She was an incredible talent and an amazing hitmaker during the 1950s. She kept recording and performing right up to her death, which was today in Las Vegas. Tonight, The Night Prowl Show on the 50s on 5 looks back on her incredible career. They called Atlantic Records “The house that Ruth built” because she had so many hits for the label back in its heyday, the 1950s. Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun reminisces about how he came to sign Ruth to his label.

The 50s on 5’s Tribute To Ruth Brown
