Harlem

Los Angeles sax “honkers” were big in the late 1940s and early ’50s, but no one was bigger than Big Jay McNeely. He established himself in 1949 with the R&B; chart topper, “Deacon’s Hop” and kept the crazed, almost be-bop sax blowing going on strong throughout the 1950s. Hear Big Jay tell his own story to Matt The Cat in an exclusive interview, only on “Harlem”.

This week HARLEM dedicates an entire hour to those women of rhythm and blues that changed the world. Their names are legendary and so is their music. You’ll hear Ruth Brown, Ann Cole, LaVern Baker, Sister Wynona Carr, Big Mama Thornton and Hadda Brooks, just to name a few. These women mean business and they’re gonna show Matt The Cat a thing or two about livin’, lovin’ and drinkin’. Watch out.

Tuesday 12/4 @ 9pm over LA & Midnight over NYC

THE
ROAD
This week, Matt The Cat gets away for THANKSGIVING as HARLEM takes to America’s highways, skyways and oceans. We’re featuring an hour of 1950s R&B; songs about cars (Rocket 88), trains (The Train Kept A-Rolling), Boats (The Ship Of Love) and of course flying in a satellite (My Satellite by Jesse Belvin). It’s all about gettin’ to where you’re going (Destination Love) and beyond. I just hope we don’t get stuck (Flat Tire). So enjoy your Thanksgiving Weekend on the road with HARLEM on the 50s on 5.
