Harlem: Week Of 12/31/07 - Dinah Washington

Queen!
DINAH WASHINGTON

This week Harlem traces the career of one of the most distinctive voices in blues, jazz and R&B; Dinah Washington. They called her the "Queen of the Juke Boxes" because she sold so many records, first with Lionel Hampton's Band and later as a solo artist. Her biographer, Nadine Cohodas joins Matt The Cat to reveal the story behind the story of this true music legend.

Harlem Airs on The 50s on 5:
Monday 12/31 @ 1pm over NYC
Tuesday 1/1 @ 9pm over LA & Midnight over NYC
Friday 1/4 @ 6pm over Baltimore
Sunday 1/6 @ 11am over Miami

Night Prowl Christmas Show

It's an annual event, so spike the nog, turn up the XM and get ready to hear from every Night Prowler. Yes, everyone's invited to THIS Christmas party. The music's gonna be great, but that goes without saying. Since it was such a hit last year, I'll be playing "Christmas In Jail" by The Youngsters every hour on the hour. Yum Yum will stop by with another "Yum" interpretation of a classic Christmas story. This is one show that'll make you proud to be an XM subscriber.

1 c Bourbon whiskey

1 c Cognac

1/2 ts Salt

3 pt Heavy cream

Grated Nutmeg
In an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks with the sugar until thick and lemon colored. Slowly add the bourbon and cognac, while beating at a slow speed. Chill several hours.
Add the salt to the egg whites and beat until almost stiff, or until the beaten whites form a peak that bends slightly.
Whip the cream until stiff. Fold the whipped cream into the yolk mixture, then fold in the beaten egg whites. Chill one hour.
When ready to serve, sprinkle the top with freshly grated nutmeg. Serve in punch cups with a spoon.
If desired, add one or two cups of milk to the yolk mixture for a thinner eggnog.

Make one of the above to prepare for the show and make merry with Matt The Cat on December 21nd.

Ike Turner - Dead at 76

IKE TURNER

1931 – 2007

Ike Turner, one of the founding fathers of rock n’ roll died today in San Diego. The cause of death has not yet been released. It was his Kings Of Rhythm group that backed up vocalist Jackie Brenston on the groundbreaking 1951 classic, “Rocket 88”. Rhythm and Blue and Rock n’ Roll music grew out of licks and style laid down by Ike long before he hired Anna Mae Bullock (Tina Turner) to head his revue. Ike has long been vilified in the movies and in print, but tonight we’ll get down to Ike Turner the musician and the innovator. The Night Prowl Show will honor Ike Turner throughout the night. May he rest in peace.

Harlem: Week Of 12/10/07 - Big Jay McNeely!

Big Jay McNeely

Los Angeles sax "honkers" were big in the late 1940s and early '50s, but no one was bigger than Big Jay McNeely. He established himself in 1949 with the R&B chart topper, "Deacon's Hop" and kept the crazed, almost be-bop sax blowing going on strong throughout the 1950s. Hear Big Jay tell his own story to Matt The Cat in an exclusive interview, only on "Harlem".

Harlem Airs On The 50s on 5:
Monday 12/10 at 1pm ET
Tuesday 12/11 at 9pm PT – Midnight ET
