Harlem: Week Of 10/29/07 - T-Bone Walker

The Father Of Modern Blues Guitar...

T-Bone Walker

He is probably the most influential post WWII guitarist, having effected the styles of everyone from B. B. King and Chuck Berry to Jimi Hendrix, who mimicked his antics on-stage. This week’s HARLEM will look at T-Bone’s beginnings with Capitol Records and move into his heyday with the Black & White and Imperial labels during the late 1940s into the early 1950s. Rock n’ Roll guitar work owes a lot to this often overlooked legend. Matt The Cat uncovers the essential T-Bone Walker, this week on HARLEM.

Harlem Airs on the 50s on 5:
Monday 10/29 @ 1pm ET
Tuesday 10/30 @ 9pm PT – Midnight ET
Friday 11/2 @ 6pm ET
Sunday 11/4 @ 11am ET

Everly's Win Close Cat Fight!

Everly Brothers Win 2nd Consecutive Friday Night Cat Fight!

Last night on the Friday Night Cat Fight, The Everly Brothers defeated Jerry Butler and Betty Everett by a score of 44 to 43 over the song, "Let It Be Me". 86 Night Prowlers voted and caused a 43 to 43 tie. According to Chapter 14, Section 2, line 48:

When the final voting result of a Cat Fight is tied by the voting masses, the host (Matt The Cat) must cast his vote in order to break such a tie score. The host (Matt The Cat) shall not vote under any other circumstances.

So, after much inner contemplation...I broke the tie by voting for the Everly Brothers. They were a bit more earnest in their singing style and I thought the musical arrangement was also better. Jerry and Betty did a fine, fine job as well, but if I'm going to ask others to vote for the one they like a little better, then I must apply the same logic to my voting selection.
The Everlys will return next week to try and make it 3 weeks in a row.

If you would like to vent your frustration with me, please do so below in the "comments" section.

Soulfully,
Matt The Cat

Harlem: Week Of 10/15/07 - Howlin' Wolf

This week, Harlem goes moanin' in the moonlight with...
Howlin'
Wolf
He has a sound that was all his own. A sound that is as original today as it was back in 1951 when he burst on the scene. He learned guitar from the legendary Charlie Patton and harmonica from the influential Sonny Boy Williamson. Put those influences together with his natural growl and you have Howlin' Wolf. This week, Matt The Cat will look at Wolf's early work with Sam Phillips in Memphis along with the world famous sides that he cut with the Chess Brothers in Chicago. Hear the Cat prowl with the Wolf, all week on Harlem.

Harlem Airs on the 50s on 5:
Monday 10/15 @ 1pm EST
Tuesday Night 10/16 at 9pm PST and Midnight EST
Friday 10/19 @ 6pm EST

Matt The Cat - ENGAGED! Sorry Kittens!

At an altitude of 3000 feet, in a hot air balloon over Maryland, on September 30th, 2007, I asked Cross Country Kelly to marry me.

Sorry kittens, but this cat is taken and now my records are her records (except for the Cardinals and Sun 78s).

On Monday Night's Night Prowl Show, we made our announcement official. Here's what our story sounded like live over the air.
