Harlem: Week of 10/23/06

This week, HARLEM welcomes one of the underrated, true innovators of 50s R&B...

Hank Ballard & The Midnighters

Hank Ballard got his big break in 1953 when he joined a local Detroit group called The Royals. Almost immediately, they changed their name to The Midnighters so they wouldn't be confused with The Five Royales, another popular R&B group of the day. The Midnighters would go on to have many #1 R&B records including the extremely influential, dirty and controversial "Work With Me Annie" from 1954. This week Matt The Cat digs up some of The Midnighters most important sides and gives 'em a spin on the show that solutes early 50s rhythm and blues; HARLEM.

Harlem Airs on the 50s on 5:
Monday Afternoon 10/23 @ 1pm over Stowe, VT
Tuesday Night 10/24 @ 9pm PST & Midnight EST
Friday Night 10/27 @ 6pm over Ipswich, MA
Sunday Morning 10/29 @ 11am over High Point, NC

Happy 80th Birthday

Chuck Berry

Tonight we salute the legendary Shakespeare of Rock n' Roll, Chuck Berry. His influence can be felt all over popular music from the day "Maybellene" hit the charts all the way up to today. His songs were about things that every rock n' roll kid could relate to: school, cars & young love. No matter who you are, you have a favorite Chuck Berry song. Help us honor The Chucker with a Very Berry Wednesday on The Night Prowl Show.

Harlem: Week of 10/16/06

The Late, Great
Johnny Ace

This week HARLEM takes a look at the first true casualty of Rock n' Roll, Johnny Ace. He was one of the most promising young R&B talents of the early to mid 1950s until he died under very mysterious circumstances on Christmas Day, 1954 in Houston, TX. You'll hear several of his top R&B hits plus the story behind the story of the late, great Johnny Ace, this week on HARLEM.

Harlem Airs on the 50s on 5:
Monday 10/16 @ 1pm over Boston
Tuesday Night 10/17 at 9pm over LA & Midnight over NYC
Friday 10/20 at 6pm over Philadelphia
Sunday Morning 10/22 at 11am over Ocean Beach, NJ

Don't forget that Johnny Ace was such a signature figure that Paul Simon used his death as a metaphor for the murder of John Lennon in his song, "The Late Great Johnny Ace".

Rockabilly Thursday

Rockabilly Thursday
Gene Vincent-style

Rockabilly Thursday RETURNS to honor Gene Vincent, who died 35 years ago today. It's so unfortunate, because Gene is more revered today then he was during his lifetime. He is the epitome of "cool". He was an incredible rockabilly singer, because he could rock harder than anybody, as well as whisper a sweet love song. Gene Vincent should have been HUGE, but he only had a handful of hits. We'll set the record straight on The Night Prowl Show. Also, dig other Rockabilly greats like Sonny Burgess, Carl Perkins, Danny Dell, Jack Scott, Johnny Burnette and Charlie Rich. This is a show not to miss!

HARLEM: Week Of 10/9/05

Mr. Excitement
Rocks
HARLEM

In the 1950s JACKIE WILSON had it all. His looks, his moves and his incredible voice shook the nation and helped to usher in the dawn of rock n' roll. Where do you think Elvis got all those pelvic gyrations? He got 'em from JACKIE, man. Hear Jackie Wilson's earth shaking beginnings as lead vocalist for the Dominoes through to his 1957 breakthrough and beyond. Look up "soul" in your dictionaries and sure enough you'll find a picture of Jackie Wilson (and Bobby Bennett), because he was there when it all began and so was HARLEM on the 50s on 5.

Tuesday 10/10 @ 9pm over LA & midnight over Medford, MA
