Happy New Year!
Thank you, cats n' kittens for making 2005 a great year for XM and especially for me. The show has grown by leaps and bounds and it's all because of your listenership, participation and love for some of the greatest music ever made. I've got some great things planned in 2006, so keep your radios on and turned up.
All the best to you and your family and here's to hopes of a great, peaceful New Year.
Soulfully,
-Matt The Cat
This week on Harlem...

BEFORE HE WAS CROWNED
"KING"
Elvis was busy being influenced by RHYTHM & BLUES!

This week HARLEM prowls around the back alleys of Memphis searching for the original R&B versions of songs that ELVIS made immortally popular. January 8th marks what would have been Elvis' 71st birthday. Don't miss this amazing opportunity to hear three different versions of the classic "Good Rockin' Tonight" as it progressed from Roy Brown to Wynonie "Mr. Blues" Harris to ELVIS himself. There's good rockin' this week on the 50s on 5's HARLEM with Matt The Cat.

Harlem will groove you on the 50s on 5 all week:
Monday 1/2 @ 1pm EST
Tuesday Night 1/3 @ 9pm over LA & midnight over NYC

Noggin'

Hey Cats n' Kittens,

Well, I hate to do it, but I need to take a holiday vacation.

I want to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas. Right now, I'm drinking NOG...lots and lots of nog. Oh yeah, don't worry, I've got plenty of 'meg for my nog. We're all set.

The Night Prowl Show will return to the air LIVE on Thursday, December 29th, so we'll save all the New Year's wishes until then.

Thanks Night Prowlers, for making this the best year of my life. As you know, my radio program is very important to me and it's your support and listenership that have made it such a great success. Here's to even more great Night Prowl and Harlem shows in 2006.

Once again, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and I'll see you on the 29th.

Alan & Jesse

Tonight It's
Alan & Jesse

Alan Freed, the DJ who coined the term rock n' roll and did more for the mainstreaming of rhythm and blues music than anyone else, was born on this day in 1922. We'll hear some rare airchecks from his early DJing days at WJW in Cleveland from 1952 and 1953.

Jesse Belvin, one of the greatest voices in all of 1950s rhythm and blues was born on this day in 1932. We'll hear many of his own great songs as well as songs that he sang on without getting credit for.

Wednesday Night

Wednesday Night:

The Night Prowl Show

Brenda Lee turned 61 on Sunday. We honor that little pint of dynomite in typical Night Prowl fashion.

Big Mama Thorton was born on 12/11 back in 1926 and we cats n' kittens have got to pay respect to one of the greatest R&B singers of all time.

Sam Cooke is shot to death on 12/11 back in 1964 and we'll look back with the help of author Peter Guralnick who has just written a book about Sam Cooke entitled "Dream Boogie".

Connie Francis turned 67 on Monday. We'll do a little somethin' special for one of the cutest voices of '50s and '60s rock n' roll.

All This and your requests & dedications, Wednesday Night on the Night Prowl Show.

Friday Night

Your weekend begins at 7pm ET / 4pm PT with the start of the Friday Night Prowl Show!

The Friday Night Cat Fight happens at 10pm ET and YOU, Night Prowlers will get to decide the winner per usual.

Sonny Till of the Orioles died on this day in 1981, so I'll be doing a little featurette on one of the greatest voice in doo wop history.

Tomorrow marks the 38th Anniversary of the plane crash that killed the great Otis Redding (The Big O), so I'll definitely pay tribute to one of the most soulful men ever to live.

You're requests and dedications at 1-866-267-0346.

Have a groovy weekend and don't let the Christmas season drive you crazy like it does me. I believe I have finished my Christmas shopping for the year and that makes me happy. Now, I just have to worry about whether or not all the gifts will be delivered in time. Oh Mercy!

Tis the season for NOGGIN'! So get that nog and dig on some nutmeg and get down to the sound that's all around, coming down from the Satellite!

Little Richard + Freddy Cannon

Little Richard turns 70!
The "Wildman Of Rock n' Roll" turns 70 today and your furry leader, Matt The Cat is going to give him the kind of radio celebration he deserves. As one of the innovators of rock n' roll, we probably wouldn't be where we are today if it wasn't for the energy of his 1950s records as well as all the risks he took along the way. Let's also not forget that Richad had one of the tightest bands in rock history backin' him up. Dig that frantic sounds of the true KING of rock n' roll, tonight on the Night Prowl Show.
Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon turned 65 on Sunday, December 4th. Don't worry, I won't forget about my fellow Bostonian tonight on the show.

HARLEM: Week Of 12/5/05

The
SWALLOWS

This week, Matt The Cat spotlights one of the greatest R&B vocal groups of all time, The Swallows. Today, they're mostly remembered for their risqué classic "It Ain't The Meat" (which wasn't a hit at the time), but their real strength was in ballads. Their smooth, harmonies are almost peerless. Catch all of their amazing R&B hits as well as the story behind the story on The Swallows, this week on Harlem.

Harlem Airs on the 50s on 5:
Monday 12/5 @ 1pm ET
Tuesday 12/6 @ 9pm in LA and Midnight in NYC
Friday 12/9 @ 6pm ET
Sunday 12/11 @ 11am ET
