Letter Printed In Discoveries Magazine

My Summer Vacation

Hello Night Prowlers,

I'm BACK! Thanks for being so patient. I had a great time up in Mattacattachusetts and Maine. Here are a few pics from my trip.

Laurie Cabot is the "official" witch of Salem, MA. This is her shop. I grew up in a town pretty close to Salem, but NEVER visited Laurie's shoppe. A day in Salem is always a good time.

This next picture was taken in Gloucester, MA. It's been years since I've been to Gloucester and it was good to get back. The Gorton's Fisherman is alive and well. A visit to Mystery Train Records was a bust, when I found their 78 RPM records to be way overpriced and in horrible shape. Shame on you, Mystery Train. What happened to those good ol' days of you and me.

This is one of the most beautiful places on Earth: Ogunquit, Maine and the Marginal Way. It's been six long years since I've gotten to the rocky Maine coast. It's the Big Sur of the East Coast. And the Lobstah...forgitaboutit!

In this last photo, a storm is about to strike the beautiful Maine coast. From Maine, I headed down the Cape for a few days before returning up to the satellite.

That's what I did over my summer vacation.

Don't miss the Night Prowl Show as it returns to the air live on Monday, August 28th at 7pm EST - 4pm PST.

Richard Barrett - RIP

We lost another.

Richard Barrett is one of the poor Rock n' Roll innovators who's name may have been lost to history, but his influence is still felt today. He died yesterday at age 70 of prostate cancer. Barrett was born in Philadelphia in 1936. He moved to NYC in 1952 with dreams of getting into music. He was a founding member of underrated doo wop group, The Valentines, who scored local NY hits with "Lilly Maebelle", "Tonight Kathleen" and "Woo Woo Train".

Barrett was ESSENTIAL to the success of George Goldner's NY labels, Rama, Gee, End and Gone, as well as Morris Levy's Roulette Records. He discovered Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers and brought them to the attention of Goldner, who signed them to his Gee Label. "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" was an instant success. He discovered Little Anthony & The Imperial and became the producer and manager of the first mega successful girl group in rock n' roll; The Chantels.

In the 1970s, Barrett worked with The Three Degrees and even produced their hit cover of The Chantels' "Maybe" (which he wrote back in 1958) in 1970. He also produced records by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. As you can see, Richard Barrett touched many of our lives and many of our genres.
Please remember this rock n' roll pioneer.

Thank you,

Matt The Cat
