{"id":467,"date":"2010-04-01T10:07:52","date_gmt":"2010-04-01T14:07:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mattthecat.com\/Blog2\/?p=467"},"modified":"2010-04-01T10:08:10","modified_gmt":"2010-04-01T14:08:10","slug":"matt-the-cat-mention-in-ny-daily-news-3-31-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mattthecat.com\/Blog2\/2010\/04\/01\/matt-the-cat-mention-in-ny-daily-news-3-31-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Matt The Cat Mention In NY Daily News 3-31-10"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Some artists simply resonate with radio listeners, and the multiple tributes to Johnny Maestro since his death last week say he was one.<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif; font-size: small;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><em>New York Daily News <\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>March 31, 2010<\/em><\/div>\n<div>\u00c2\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00c2\u00a0By DAVID HINCKLEY<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Saturday at midnight on WFUV (90.7 FM), Dan Romanello will salute Maestro on \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Group Harmony Review\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which grew out of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Time Capsule Show,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d which launched in March 1963 and whose first-ever voice was Johnny Maestro, leading the Crests on \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Sweetest One.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif;\">Maestro, a quiet New York kid who became riveting when he took the stage, cut more than a dozen great records with the Crests \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a seriously underappreciated vocal group \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and then scored again with the Brooklyn Bridge. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif;\">His work was saluted on WCBS-FM, WFDU, WBZO, WMTR, WVOX, WRSU, WLNG and on Sirius XM \u00e2\u20ac\u201c though radio rarely does extended tributes any more unless the artist is on the level of Michael Jackson. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif;\">Twenty years ago WCBS-FM\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Bobby Jay would have done at least an hour in the Hall of Fame the night Maestro died. That doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t happen now, though WCBS-FM (101.1) program director Brian Thomas says listeners still do \u00e2\u20ac\u0153appreciate our remembering.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif;\">Sirius XM\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Norm N. Nite did a half hour on Maestro, talking with contemporaries like Jay Black, Lou Christie and Dion, and that was good. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif;\">But since Sirius XM first sold itself as alternative radio, it was frustrating that it no longer has a live weeknight host like Matt the Cat who could have done a longer, more music-based retrospective on an important life and career. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif;\">Memo to Sirius XM: Bring back MTC. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif;\">Bobby Jay, meanwhile, says he misses Maestro not only as an artist, but as a friend with whom he often recorded.\u00c2\u00a0<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Johnny not only had that distinctive voice, he was a brilliant musician,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d says Jay. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153He understood vocal harmony. He did all his arrangements and he had a great ear. If 20 people were singing and one was a little sharp or flat, he heard it. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Microsoft Sans Serif;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153He was a singer. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what he was about. He wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t interested in the show biz life.
