“I’m A Fool To Care”

This week’s Cat Fight is a 3-way over the Ted Daffan tune, “I’m A Fool To Care.”  Facing off this week are 2 versions from 1954 by Anna Marie & The Stardusters (better known as Abbey Lincoln) and Philly’s own Castelles.  They are up against the biggest hit of the tune in the rock era by Joe Barry from 1961.  And for good measure, I’m also throwing in Les Paul and Mary Ford’s top 10 hit version also from ’54.

The show also focuses on mostly doo wop songs that vocalize the sound of bells ringing.  Sound crazy?  It is, but you’ve got to hear it to believe it!  So listen to the hour long show, vote and dig, baby!  This is the “world famous” Friday Night Cat Fight Show!

I voted for the Joe Barry version if I have ever heard that version before I am fairly certain that I assumed that it was Fat’s. Knowing that it wasn’t I could tell the difference but the voices are very similar. The tunes about the sound of bells rings was very entertaining. Good job Matt another really good show. Thank you for sharing with us.

My vote went to Joe Barry tonight. It’s just IMHO a more listenable version. However, has Les and Mary been in the running, They would have had my vote. My goodness, Mary is sounding kinda sexy on that cut.

I voted for the Castelles but it was tough as IMO all 3 were great. As timevac3 says above, I would have gone with Les & Mary if they had been in the running.

Also, it was great to hear the Quintones, the pride of York, Pennsylvania. Here is an alternate source for their songs which also includes some interesting demos.

Anna Marie all the way!! That baby was ment to be a torch song. And the sublime guitar work that runs through the whole song, wow! Who did the guitar work Matt? Too me Barry’s version was just too plodding. Don’t get me wrong I’m a fan Barry and the swamp pop/Domino sound that he utilizes for his version, but it just doesn’t seem like it does much for the song. Thought the Castelles were the next best choice but it was missing that sweet guitar sound.
