Friday Night Cat Fight Podcast

“You Are My Sunshine”

This week’s Cat Fight is a battle royal as 10 different versions of the classic tune, “You Are My Sunshine” battle it out.  Now, 10 are in competition, but this podcast contains 18 1/2 different versions of the tune, so stand back!  For many years, country music legend and former governor of Louisiana Jimmie Davis claimed to have written “You Are My Sunshine,” but the reality is that he bought it off of Paul Rice of The Rice Brothers Gang (who cut their version in 1939).  Listen to the show to hear many unique versions of the song ranging from country to pop to R&B and soul.  Pick the one you dig the most and vote for it below.

This is great! I voted for Davis, but that Johnny and the Hurricanes instrumental version is awesome. A simple no-flair version of the song works best for me — my favorite is Norman Blake’s version from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack.

    Great Cat Fight!
So much to take in…I voted for Johnny & the Hurricanes. I love Ray Charles take, always have but I love the way Johnny & the Hurricanes take traditional and folk songs and turn them into rock and roll masterpieces that make you want to dance…much like You are My Sunshine, or Reveille Rock, orRed River Rock…Johnny and the Hurricanes just flat out rock.

Voted for Ray but with a protest. I think that his version may have skewed the results. Also liked the Rice Bros and my most familiar early version, Gene Autrys. Dyke and the Blazers! Haven’t heard of them since the early 60’s ‘Funky Broadway’.

I thought I would be voting for Ray Charles on the first listen, but the second time around I realize the music is very different from the original versions, too different in my opinion. Margie Hendricks also was fabulous, but only the words are correct. Since neither Duane Eddy nor Johnny Cash are in the running I will have to vote for Johnny & The Hurricanes. Thank you again Matt for continuing to go the extra mile for your fans.

The Rice Brothers Gang absolutely and without question, they play the song the way it was meant to be upbeat and simple. Most of the other versions which include flashy vocal stylings, orchestration or electric guitar licks only seem to take away from the sweetness of the song. Can you imagine how traumatized any baby would be if their mother or father sang the Ray Charles version to them? I can already see the look of bewilderment followed by tears and crying. The Rice Brother Gang’s version is also the only one that has a great harmonica line running throughout its entirety adding just one more reason it got my vote.
