The
Checkers

The Checkers formed at the end of 1951, when Charlie White and Bill Brown left The Dominoes. Get it! They left the Dominoes and formed THE CHECKERS. Yeah well, they picked up a few other guys and they were off recording for King Records. After 3 years together and no hits, they called it quits. But what they left behind is a treasure trove of 1950s rhythm and blues. Get the story behind the Checkers and some of their greatest recordings on this week’s HARLEM.

Harlem Airs on The 50s on 5:
Monday 6/19 @ 1pm EST
Tuesday 6/20 @ 9pm PST – Midnight EST

Cats n’ Kittens,
It’s a disease, it’s a disease! I can’t stop collecting 78 RPM records. Here are the latest adds to my growing collection. I can’t look at a 45 anymore without thinking, “hmmm, wouldn’t this look and sound great on 78”. Check out these beauties.

Bluesday Tuesday:
This an extra special Bluesday Tuesday, as I feature both Wynonie “Mr. Blues” Harris and Clyde McPhatter as well as a heaping helping of extra R&B; and blues to get cha ready for Harlem. Clyde died on this day back in 1972 and Wynonie passed away on June 14, 1969. By the way, Harlem featues the Atlantic Records Story Part 2, so don’t mis that, tonight at midnight EST and 9pm PST.

West Coast Wednesday:
One of the most popular weekly features on the Night Prowl, West Coast Wednesday features extra plays of West Coast solo artists, vocal groups and instrumental groups. Grab your transistor and surf board and head for the California Sun.

B-Side Thursday:

Request or discover your favorite record B sides with B-Side Thursday. Dig on some fabulous flips, like “Woman Love”, the b-side of “Be-Bop-A-Lu-La” or “Honey Chile”, the flip of “Blueberry Hill”. Flip it over baby, cause the b-side wins again and again on the Night Prowl.

Friday Night:

Get ready for the craziest night of the week. The Friday Night Cat Fight returns at 10pm est – 7pm pst. Start your weekend off right with the Friday Night Prowl Show.
